Tech Briefing Ideas

In the comment below, propose the tech briefing you want to present.

THANKS for your comments.  I will go through them and your proposal to create a spreadsheet that I will share with you.  In the meantime, you can comment on others' ideas, as will I.  I will also post articles that I think will help some topics and inform others.

    1. My understanding is that you want to show how hackers use an open source browser framework Webkit to send emails to Tesla’s customers portraying that they’re from Tesla and send a bug allowing them to run malicious code from their crafted website. That is a great topic, but also say how Tesla has responded to this hack (which they have).

  2. The Decline of Physical Media:

Streaming and the capability for modern tech to handle massive downloads has already begun to kill physical media. Netflix has nearly single-handedly done this to the movie industry while Spotify and friends do the same to music. Even many video games can be downloaded directly to the console. There is very little need to physically own media anymore but this raises its own set of problems. One may have all the music in the world on their spotify account but they own none of it. The modes of access can be made more expensive or changed at the will of the provider. This ties in with SaaS as well where true licenses are becoming rarer.

    1. Tealeaf is a company now owned by IBM that captures customers interaction with a website by recording the customers movements online. Tealeaf is utilized to replay and analyze details of visits that will provide information to help detect errors or issues with a business process specifically with online purchases. This is a tool to look at specific customers that use a website or mobile app and track all of their moves throughout the website such as why some customers leave an online purchase early due to invalid promotion codes or other issues. You are able to view custom dashboards and understand customer trends on a more detailed level. This is yet another technology that is tracking your every move to collect important data.

  4. Will Autonomous Cars Kill Industries?
In this talk I want to explore the impact that self-driving vehicles will have on our society once they have been adopted into society as the majority norm. once the switch happens, will auto companies who can’t produce these types of cars be bought out or shut down? Will driver’s licenses be obsolete, and with it the DMV because the internet and the cloud will do all the driving? Will insurance be replaced by warranties and crash the entire insurance industry due to less accidents? Will this be the way taxi companies make a comeback to fight against Uber? If malicious crackers crash the system will the society of that time be stranded with no knowledge of how to manually drive and automobile?

Security in Regard to the Internet of Things

Last semester, I did quite a bit of research on the DDoS attack launched against Dyn, which was conducted by using devices that are part of the internet of things. Many manufacturers put default username and passwords on these devices, which make them very easy to hack. This could lead to even bigger problems in the future. Furthermore, as devices become smarter and more linked, the prospect of them being hacked becomes more dangerous. As we progress toward a world with driverless vehicles that are part of the IoT, the question of security is pretty pressing. Therefore, I’d like to see what measures are being taken, or could be implemented, to ensure these devices remain secure.

  6. I am interested in music and the industry in general and how technology has changed how artists sell their music. I think it would be interesting to see the difference in how much an artist makes on different platforms and how reaching platinum status on a song or album has changing with the influx of technology. I'd also like to discuss why artists would chose one platform over another. History of technology in music has changed a lot and a small lesson of how revenue generation has changed with technology would be given.

  11. Li-Fi

Li-Fi is a type of wireless communication, similar to Wi-Fi. The main differences between the two are the method of communication and security. Li-Fi, unlike Wi-Fi communicates using bidirectional visible light. It can literally send data at the speed of light. Pretty cool. This method of communication hints at the ability to raise bandwidth limitations of Wi-Fi that are restricted by radio frequency. The second key benefit of Li-Fi is security. Since transmissions are sent through light, they are confined to the rooms that they are hosted in. For these reasons, among others, Li-Fi would be an interesting topic to learn and teach.

  12. For my tech briefing, I would like to present on technology behaviors and the effect on our mental health. In my experience, I have noticed a lack of focus on tasks like homework, or reading, immediately following a long period of being on my phone scrolling through Instagram posts. This must be an even bigger problem with younger kids. From the park to classroom to the kitchen table, young kids everywhere always have iPads and iPhones. Why have parents resorted to this option to entertain their kids? Is there a long run effect? Will the next generation of parents be better? I think this would be a great topic to dive deeper into.

  14. The internet of things is simply taking network connectivity, and shoving it in things that don’t normally have it. Put internet in your hot tub so you can fill it before you get home. Put internet on your coffee maker, hook it up to your phone alarm, and have coffee made at the precise moment the alarm goes off. Almost anything can be hooked up to a wireless network, be given an IP Address, and connect to the outside world. This can create great convenience to everyone around the world. The main player in this game is IBM, who has created Watson IoT. Their goal is to normalize all of things connected to the IoT, create massive data sets for their AI Watson to run through, and then have information be sent back to the devices or the user, which can hopefully improve their efficiency over time. We are interested in this as soon, almost everything anyone owns will be hooked up to the internet. We want to understand the technology, and be at the forefront of it so we can help develop for it and help businesses to use it.

    2. Yes, the hype around IoT is pretty extensive. Since there are two of you, one can explain what IoT it is and how it works, and the other could address how long it will be before it becomes part of every household. (Adding in the controversy.)

  24. Privacy has been a major issue in our society especially with the rapid advance of technology. The government wants to be able to protect their citizens from any radicalized ideas through the Internet that would cause harm to the society, or from any communication between individuals to commit a terror attacks. Sometimes, the government goes beyond the limits, and they violate the individual’s privacy, which is against the constitution that protects the people and their right of privacy from being violated.

  28. I would like to learn about the Microsoft HoloLens. I first saw this product at the Arizona Hackathon, and it really stood out to me. I do not know much information about it or augmented reality in general. That is why I would love to learn about it and then share my findings with the rest of the class.

  29. The disruptive technology that I want to present on is self-driving cars. I would love to research and teach the class on this, as I follow their development closely. Self-driving cars share a lot of potential topics and issues with IoT, as they are included in the Internet of Things. Other issues could be how secure these devices need to be in the cyber sense, so that hackers cannot hijack a self-driving car, for example. Another example of this issue is if you will need a password or fingerprint to start your car in the future, as opposed to a physical key?
